On 5th May 2016, London held a new election for its mayorship, alongisde the national local elections held the same day. The leading and winning candidate for the mayor was Sadiq Khan, a member of the Labour Party. In this election, he received 1,310,143 votes, which set the new record for the most amount of votes an individual British politician has received.
Khan is the third person to hold the position of being the Mayor of London. The position has only existed since 2000.
