This positive article appeared on my Facebook feed yesterday:
Hajer Sbehawi and her much-younger sister, both from Michigan, attended a rally of Hillary Clinton's main rival in the United States presidential election. Their purpose was to spread love and to educate the participants of the rally that Muslims, such as themselves, are not at all violent - they're just people, like everybody else. Sbehawi reckons that many people at such rallies have never met a Muslim and are ignorant rather than purposely hateful.
What is sad is that Sbehawi and others like her feel that it's necessary to educate others that Muslims are not inherently violent. I met several Muslims at college and it would be ridiculous to assume that all, most or even just a handful of them were evil people. They were there to learn and to make friends - the same reason that everyone else went to college.

Melissa Gilbert's Congressional run
Actress and former President of the Screen Actors Guild Melissa Gilbert is running for Congress is Michigan's 8th District. She moved to Howell - a town in the district - in 2013 after she married her current husband. Her reasons for running can be summarized as, "wanting to help others".
What are Gilbert's chances of winning? The media has described the seat as "solidly Republican" and, to be fair, the seat has been held by that party since 2001. That being said, it's certainly not impossible for Gilbert to emerge victorious: it's a swing area on the presidential level (Clinton x2, Bush x2, Obama, Romney) and its current incumbent was first elected in 2014 with 54.6% of the vote to the Democrats' 42.1%. Before the main election, though, she still needs to pass the primary.
Why am I writing about Gilbert? To the general public she is known for her prominent role as Laura Ingalls Wilder in 1970/80s TV series Little House on the Prairie and for her work with the Screen Actors Guild; however, I saw her in some episodes of the 1990s science fiction show Babylon 5, in which she performed with one of her former husbands, Bruce Boxleitner. I remember being disappointed when that marriage concluded.
All I can do with her run is watch what happens. I'll be sure to post about Gilbert again once she's undergone the primary and - if she succeeds in the former - the main election.

Ypsilanti, Michigan
On a QWERTY keyboard, "o" and "p" are next to each other, just as they are in the alphabet. On my phone, I sometimes press one when I have meant the other. I also use word prediction and auto-correct on my phone.
Occasionally when I type the word "you" I accidentally press "yp". Whenever I do, my phone predicts that I want to spell the word "Ypsilanti". On the first time I saw this happen, I thought I'd accidentally typed in "Ypsilanti" at some point and my phone was suggesting my made-up word to me as a prediction.
Fortunately, I turned out to be wrong. I researched "Ypsilanti": it turns out that there are a few people with that as their last name and there is a Ypsilanti in Michigan, as well as a tiny place in North Dakota with it, too. It's not something I spelled by accident.
Amazing what you learn from a spelling error!

The oldest American
I read this article last night before I went to bed:
Jeralean Talley is the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest person in the world; she celebrated her 115th birthday yesterday. Talley has lived in Inkster, Michigan, which is in the Detroit area, since 1935 and was married for 52 years to Alfred Talley; from what I've read about Jeralean Talley, she has lived a happy life.
