"Stuck in the Boring Car on a Road Trip" - CollegeHumor

This recent CollegeHumor video appealed to me (they usually do but this one more than usual):

I can understand the frustration of being isolated from the main group at a social outing, as it means you lose out on the friendship circle that forms for the duration of the outing and beyond. This has happened to me and in such cases, I've been grouped with either a person or people who didn't want to talk or worse, was grouped with no one at all. This made fitting in with everyone else extremely difficult, at best.

On the other hand, in the case of a road group, being in the "boring" car may not be much a bad thing, for there's less of a chance of the driver being distracted by any funny business"

This particular video is the first in a multi-part series to do with something else but holds its own as a standalone video.

The identical dresses

Here's a light-hearted piece from the news:

Seeing five identical but accidental outfits at an event like a wedding would be hilarious! At least the women involved here saw it that way. For men, we're uniformly in suits at formal occasions so we're all dressed identically by default.

"Thrift Shop" parody by Bart Baker

Back in 2012 and 2013, Macklemore's song "Thrift Shop" was popular. A least one notable parody was spawned from it:

It's Bart Baker's parody of "Thrift Shop". Bart Baker creates parodies out of popular songs, such as One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful", Taylor Swift's "Style" and Arianna Grande's "Problem". While his videos are usually crude, they are nevertheless hilarious.

Macklemore last appeared in my blog in a post from February 2014 about Mary Lambert.

Phone maker joke

In light of the new iPhone, I posted this joke to Facebook today:

"So, Apple has replaced wired headphones with wireless. In the long-running game of smartphone maker one-upmanship, our favourite South Korean company announced the upcoming "Samsung Galaxy Blank" - a phone without a screen; makes an excellent paperweight. Meanwhile, Google suggested that its next Nexus might not even have corporeal form - users instead rely on imagination for functionality. Unfortunately, patent trolls claim ownership of both ideas. Stay tuned for more Onion-like news!"

It should be noted that my phone is a Galaxy Note!

"Toy Story 4" - Robot Chicken

When my family and I lived in America, one show that Dad, my brother and I enjoyed was Robot Chicken, a stop-motion animation sketch comedy on [adult swim]. The show tends to joke about popular culture and while it's quite vulgar, Robot Chicken is hilarious.

I recently re-discovered Robot Chicken when I came across some Harry Potter-related clips from it but one that might resonate more with people is this one:

That's quite a piece of dark humor about Toy Story! I miss watching Robot Chicken; watching it with Dad is a pastime I'll never be able to experience again.

As for Toy Story 4, that is a real film and is supposed to be released in 2018.

"White & Nerdy" - "Weird Al" Yankovic

Quite a few songs I used to know really well are turning ten this year; here is one:

It's "White and Nerdy" by "Weird Al" Yankovic, which is from his twelfth studio album, Straight Outta Lynwood, and is a parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin'". The song is one of Yankovic's most known and praised singles; Chamillionaire himself was deeply impressed with the parody and was shocked at the high quality of Yankovic's rapping.

I have written about Yankovic before: I once covered his song "Word Crimes".

"How Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith Should Have Ended"

Another channel I follow on YouTube is How It Should Have Ended, which creates parody endings to popular films. Now, I do enjoy Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and I think it's a great movie but I love this ending for it:

All of the Star Wars endings are funny on this channel, as are most of the other endings I've watched on it. This is my favourite, though.

Kasich eats!

One of the more bizarre parts of the 2016 presidential election in the United States (well, "bizarre" by this election's standards) was the recorded eating habits of Ohio Governor John Kasich:

The video is narrated by speeches from Donald Trump about Kasich's insatiable appetite but the commentary actually fits in that it turns the eating clips into a comedy; Trump almost sounds like an unfiltered Jay Leno performing a roast. Kasich eating during a large portion (pun intended) of his media appearances was strange, to say the least; on the other hand, perhaps it was a hidden sign that he would have been a tame president - he'd have spent much of his presidency eating his way around the world!

And as an aside, I think "Kasich eat!" falls into my list of my "oddest and most unlikely blog titles".

"This One Brave Soul Spoke Out Against Internet Procrastination. The Response Completely Changed My View On Life!"

I posted this to Facebook a few hours ago:

"Recently, I've become more active in *not* clicking clickbait headlines. So far, it has worked and has saved me valuable time for more productive tasks. Should have done it sooner!

However, even before I started, the type of headline I was ignoring was 'Person 1 said something and Person 2 DESTROYED them!'. These aren't even clickbait anymore...they're just outright ridiculous and entered old hat territory when I read about how certain US presidential candidates were DESTROYED this way (some several times, in fact) yet still have active campaigns."

I usually groaned, tutted or muttered something whenever I saw such headlines but I continued to read articles associated with them until I saw a dozen or so pages about Donald Trump being "demolished", "destroyed" or "obliterated" by someone who made some mildly witty remark about something he'd said. The blatantly-bogus headlines became boring (and no, this isn't an endorsement of Trump - it's possible to be a critic and still reject nonsensical claims about someone or something).

Oh, and the clickbaity title for this post is intentional; it's from a comment I posted on my Facebook post when a friend and I were joking about this topic. This is, by far, my longest blog post title.

"Where The Weirdest Internet Links Come From" - CollegeHumor

This CollegeHumor video addressed the "clickbait" (and often gross) links at the bottom of some articles on the Internet:

While it isn't covered in the video, an aspect of social media I find annoying is when "gross" articles appear in my feed, even though I have never clicked on any such articles before. I stick to what I want to read.

"...advice from the comments section"

I've mentioned comments sections so many times on Air Nice-to-Livelands that it's surprising I didn't post this sooner:

Remember, don't read the comments!

From Hucknall with laughs

I walked around Hucknall today, as I enjoy doing. As it turns out, the first James Bond actor has decided to go with a new title:

"The Connery" it is!

"Mitt Romney Style (Gangnam Style Parody)" - CollegeHumor

The recent return of Mitt Romney reminded me of something...

Mitt...Mitt...Mitt Romney style! "Mitt Romney Style" originated during the final weeks of the 2012 presidential election in United States and is a parody of Psy's "Gangnam Style", which was popular that year. Over three years later, I still find the song amusing and even catchy in itself.

Adele as Adele

This came up in my Facebook news feed a couple of months ago:

I'm not usually a fan of pranks but this one was both harmless and hilarious. Adele pulled the trick off splendidly.

"How Internet Commenters See The World"

Given the amount of times I've moaned here about Internet commenters, this CollegeHumor page seems appropriate to share here:

All of the cartoons are on point, especially #2, the one about feminism. Every time a woman (or even a man) says something fully rational about women's rights, trolls come out from under their rocks like termites from an appetising piece of woodwork. Also, in the last cartoon, I like CollegeHumor's subtle jab at its critics (look at background comment directly above the highlighted comment).

I acknowledge that I have posted a few items from CollegeHumor recently. Don't worry, my blog isn't turning into a re-post hub from that site!

"All Star Wars Characters Have Stupid Names"

A few weeks before my aunt and cousin took me to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, CollegeHumor released this parody video of the film:

It portrays the film's primary antagonist, Kylo Ren, becoming increasingly frustrated over the "stupid" names that inhabit the galaxy. I really enjoy this video; CollegeHumor usually creates hilarious clips but this is one of their best, in my opinion.

"Don't Look At The Comments" - CollegeHumor

While this CollegeHumor video presents a tame version of Internet comments sections, it sufficiently summarizes why looking at such sections is a bad idea:

Sometimes comments sections can give useful insight commentary into the subject of the article to which they are attached but they can be, more often than not, cesspools of trolling. Also...

...the above-linked article, also from CollegeHumor, pokes fun at the denizens of Internet comments sections.

(And just to clarify, these don't apply to people who comment on my blog!)

Review of a new husband

(My intention had been to post this on Thursday night.)

I follow Erica Griffin on YouTube. She is a technology reviewer, primarily focused on providing in-depth testing to develop highly-detailed review videos for the latest high-end smartphones. Griffin is skilled at her work: she is technical but makes such terminology sound interesting to the average viewer and she praises technology without sounding like a childish fanboy (quite a few technology viewers seem to be fanboys). When somebody asks what sort of phone they should buy, chances are I'll tell them something that I've seen in an Erica Griffin video.

Recently, Griffin married and, in her usual light-hearted manner, posted a "review" of her new husband:

I thought it was cute and wanted to share it here.

"Oh no!" I declared in despair after I awakened

I narrowly avoided a calamity this morning. On all mornings when I have to attend college, I have several alarms set on both of my phones so that if I sleep through one, there are several more that will ring. Well, today I somehow slept through between five and ten alarms. It was only when my grandmother called me that I awoke.

Once I was awake, I realised it was 10:50...forty minutes before the start of my first lesson. There was no time for me to eat breakfast, drink coffee and shower; instead, I donned my day clothing (over my pajamas), college bag and badges, and then bolted down at Peregrine falcon velocity to my bus stop a mile away. Unsurprisingly, I was shattered once I reached my stop, even though the run was downhill.

I caught the 11:12 bus, which gave me eighteen minutes to arrive at college. To my pleasant surprise, my bus made few stops, faced a mostly traffic-free route and the lights were friendly. The only part of the trip where I was delayed was after my bus drove past Nottingham's train station, where something in progress near the Broadmarsh caused a traffic jam, delaying my arrival at college by five more minutes.

When I made it to class at 11:35, I was not handed a late slip because (1) I messaged ahead to my friends to inform my teacher that I was delayed but on my way, (2) because the lesson hadn't quite started, so I was lucky, and (3) because I was within the "minutes after the start" limit for every class. Even so, I felt terrible that I had grossly overslept and was slightly late; during my first college course I was never late and even for this course I've, other than on this occasion, either been early or exactly on time. Being late, even just this once, is embarrassing and I apologised to my teacher, who was understanding, appreciated my messaging ahead and told me not to worry.

To prevent this from happening again, I will change the alarm sound on one of my phones and put the device closer to my bed. Promising to not sleep deeply again isn't a promise I can keep, so the best I can do is improve my existing alarm system. I am fortunate that this happened on a day when my first class is in the late morning - I would have missed a lesson had this occurred on an early start day and since I want to achieve 100% for the second year in a row, something like this must not happen again. I can laugh about this morning and learn from it as well.

Bathroom shock

I experienced a sweat-inducing shock this afternoon. I required use of a bathroom at college to wash my hands; this doesn't sound exciting in itself - because it isn't. However, when I opened the bathroom door to exit, there was a woman waiting to enter.

The lady completely took me by surprise, as I was certain I had entered the men's facilities, but the sight of her caused me to think that perhaps I'd somehow entered the women's bathroom by mistake or that a prank had ensnared me. Fortunately, she turned out to be a cleaner and I relaxed.

Still, the experience was alarming, mainly because for that brief moment I thought I was in the wrong place and was scaring her. I am pleased that wasn't the case.
